Outreach at the Department of Ecology and Genetics

Integrated research and nature conservation

The Department of Ecology and Genetics has a long history of interactions with agencies where we have been involved in monitoring of specific populations, species and ecosystems. We use our competence to inform policy and decision makers about the status and future strategies for sustainable management of biodiversity and ecosystem functioning.

Competence Center for Hidden Diversity

The Competence Center for Hidden Diversity share an interest in the hidden majority of eukaryotes that remain undescribed and understudied because of their cryptic life cycles in natural habitats like water and soil. In the competence center we study the diversity in forms, species and life strategies of eukaryotic microorganisms in pure cultures as well as complex natural samples. We develop tools and workflows that allow us to describe and better understand the majority of life on earth.

Lake monitoring programme

Lake Erken is one of the few lakes in Northern Europe that has a long history of monitoring, including both manual and high-frequency automatic measurements of lake and stream stations. We also maintain an automatic measurement station in the Galten bay in lake Mälaren. The Erken monitoring programme includes measurements of physical and chemical parameters as well as plankton composition.

Outreach in technology and natural sciences

The Faculty of Science and Technology has a unit for collaboration and outreach with activities for school children and events for the general public, industry and society. They arrange, for example, a science festival where several of our researchers often participate.

Water Days at the Erken field station

We implement water education days at the Erken field station for school classes from pre-school to secondary school level and also provide material that can be used in the schools.

The water days are much more than an excursion, but build on approved pedagogical concepts.
