Nordic cleanroom meeting gathered 300 participants

On 1–3 June, Myfab and Uppsala University hosted Nordic Nanolab Meeting 2026 at the Ångström Laboratory. The meeting brought together around 300 cleanroom users, researchers, engineers and technicians from academia and industry across the Nordic region to exchange knowledge on micro- and nanofabrication.

National infrastructure for research and development

Myfab is Sweden’s national research infrastructure for micro- and nanofabrication, with cleanrooms at Chalmers University of Technology, KTH Royal Institute of Technology, Lund University and Uppsala University. The infrastructure gives researchers and companies access to advanced equipment and technical expertise for developing and fabricating structures at the micro- and nanoscale.

At Uppsala University, Myfab Uppsala is located at the Ångström Laboratory. The cleanroom infrastructure is used in research across several fields, including materials science, electronics, energy technology, quantum technology and sensors. Access to cleanrooms, process equipment and expert support enables researchers to develop new materials, components and methods that require very high precision.

Nordic Nanolab Meeting is held every second year within the Nordic Nanolab Network, NNN, which brings together national nanotechnology infrastructures across the Nordic countries. Hosting rotates between the Nordic countries and in 2026 it was Sweden’s turn.

“Bringing together users and experts from across the Nordic region in this way is essential for developing both our infrastructure and our community. Techniques from introductory to advanced level

The programme included tutorials on techniques and equipment, from introductory to advanced level, together with lectures on fundamental research and applications at the very smallest scale. Participants could take part in thematic sessions on characterisation, thin-film technology, etching, bonding and lithography, as well as networking activities and guided tours of the laboratory environments.

Several researchers and staff members from Uppsala University contributed to the programme. Robin Elo gave an introduction to Auger electron spectroscopy, while Per Eklund, Arnaud le Febvrier and Laurent Souqui contributed to a tutorial on thin-film growth. Örjan Vallin from Myfab Uppsala presented laser direct writing for prototyping, and during the second day Vassilios Kapaklis and Ngan Pham contributed to programme sessions on thin-film characterisation and electron beam lithography, respectively.

Nordic collaboration in cleanroom environments

In parallel with the user meeting, a meeting was also held within the Nordic Nanolab Technician Network, NNTN. The focus was on cleanroom operations, process development and user support at the Nordic facilities. The aim was to strengthen practical collaboration between technicians and engineers working with cleanroom infrastructure in their daily work.

For Myfab Uppsala, the meeting was also an opportunity to showcase the Ångström Laboratory as an environment for both advanced research and larger international meetings.

“Everything worked very well. With 300 participants, this year’s meeting also set a new attendance record for NNUM. The Ångström Laboratory’s premises and event spaces were very well suited to a meeting of this size, and it would not have been possible without all the staff who contributed before and during the event. It was a strong joint effort,” says Stefan Nygren.
