Lars Österlund Group

Research on catalytic and optical materials, in particular functional coatings for green nanotechnologies in energy and environmental applications.

Research

The Österlund research group at Div. Solid State Physics performs research on catalytic and optical materials, in particular functional coatings for green nanotechnologies in energy and environmental applications. As a generical theme in our research, we employ a “reverse engineering” approach, embracing societal and technical problems, formulate scientific problems based on them, and dig into the physical challenges that these problems pose. Eventually, we come up with something, sometimes solving the original problem, sometimes something else.

A reversed engineering approach

As a generical theme in our research, we employ a “reverse engineering” approach, embracing societal and technical problems, formulate scientific problems based on them, and dig into the physical challenges that these problems pose. Eventually, we come up with something, sometimes solving the original problem, sometimes something else.

We study these topics by an integrated approach employing materials synthesis (various physical vapor deposition and wet chemical methods), experimental methods like vibrational spectroscopy, spectrophotometry, light scattering, x-ray diffraction, photoelectron spectroscopy, charge transport measurements, optical and quantum chemical modelling. We explore the structural, electromagnetic and surface (electro-) chemical properties of materials.

Contact

Contact group leader Lars Österlund if you have any questions about our research.

Group members teach courses in Material Optics, Solid State Physics, Nanomaterials, Semiconductor Optics, and Surface Energy Coating Technology. The group performs educational work aiming at demonstrating scientific discoveries and phenomena for high-school and university students, primarily by developing project work that also is published in educational journals.
