Description
Integration plays a vital role in the well-being of newly arrived individuals, as building social connections and feeling included in the community fosters emotional support, belonging, and mental health. For foreign-born parents in Sweden, opportunities for education, employment, and access to social services not only strengthen financial independence but also enhance their sense of inclusion and stability. Parental well-being, in turn, deeply influences children’s emotional, cognitive, and social development. When parents feel supported and confident, they are more likely to create nurturing home environments and engage in positive parenting practices that help their children thrive.
Founded in 2020, ‘Mamma United’ aims to empower mothers through a 12-session programme focusing on health, parenting, and inclusion, helping them build confidence, community, and knowledge about Swedish society. This research project, conducted by researchers from Uppsala University, the Swedish School of Sport and Health Sciences, and Karolinska Institutet, uses qualitative interviews with participants, staff, and partners to understand how the programme is experienced and what perceived impact it has on families’ lives.
