Philosophy of Religion

Research Subject

The philosophy of religion starts from the great questions of human life about existence, meaning, and value and studies the various religious and secular outlooks on life that have emerged from wrestling with them – for example, Christianity, Islam, new spirituality, naturalism, and secular humanism. Philosophy of religion is thus a research discipline that is neither limited to a particular religion nor even religions in general, as secular responses to people’s existential questions are also studied. It could be said that today, the philosophy of religion is – or is on its way to becoming – a philosophy of worldviews. However, the philosophy of religion differs from many other forms of research within religious studies in that the focus is often on the intellectual content of these worldview practices (for example, on the concept of God, theories of human nature, view of nature, and the meaning of life). Moreover, philosophers of religion seek to understand as well as critically and constructively engage with these fundamental aspects of religions and worldviews.
