Biology at Uppsala University
Biology is the science of life and living organisms. It encompasses the study of their structure, function, growth, evolution, distribution and taxonomy. Biologists investigate everything from microscopic cells to complex ecosystems and how organisms interact with each other and their environment.
At Uppsala University, biologists are trained in a wide range of specialisations, such as cell biology, ecology, evolution, immunology, microbiology, molecular biology, nature conservation, structural biology, systematics and toxicology.
We also train civil engineers specialising in biotechnology and bioinformatics, as well as teachers in biology and natural sciences.
Broad and interdisciplinary research
The University's research in biology is conducted at one of our four departments and is broad and interdisciplinary. The basis of the research is biology, but it often overlaps with other areas such as medicine, computer science, mathematics, chemistry, engineering and physics. This creates a dynamic and innovative research environment where new ideas and methods are continuously developed.

Biology Education Centre
The Department coordinates all undergraduate and master's level education in biology at Uppsala University.
Department of Cell and Molecular Biology
The department conducts broad research in biology and related fields, divided into seven programmes, and offers education for biologists and engineers at bachelor's and master's level.
Department of Ecology and Genetics
The Department consists of four research programmes and two field stations, Erken in Roslagen and Ar on Gotland.
Department of Organismal Biology
The Department of Organismal Biology is part of the Centre for Evolutionary Biology. The department's research focuses on developmental biology, systematics, evolution and physiology in living organisms.
