Look at me! Portraits, Memory, and Identity
Portraits demand our attention. Look at me! Here I am! The desire to be seen is one of the fundamental driving forces behind portraiture. Clothing, details, and symbols give clues to the identity of the depicted and reveal their vanity. But portraits are also about memory – the desire to be remembered by future generations. The people in the images meet our gaze, just as they met the gazes of their time, and their eyes already peer into the future.
The exhibition also explores the different types and functions of portraits – from ancient times to the present. Displayed here are individuals from various centuries – children, men and women. And a dog.
The exhibition is on display from April 5 to August 31, 2025.
