Borrow at our libraries in Uppsala
Library account and library card
- Anyone over 18 years old can create a library account. You do not need to be a student or employee at Uppsala University.
- If you have a campus card for Uppsala University, you can link it to your library account. You can also use your personal identity number to log in to the self-service machines. If you are not a student or affiliated with the University you can use a library card issued at one of our information desks.
Loan periods
- The standard loan period for library books is 30 days. Course literature is available as reference copies and 7-day loans.
- In some libraries, course literature is available as day loans. These cannot be renewed and must be returned when the library closes.
- In-house loans and reference books may only be used inside the library.
Borrowing
The registration process and borrowing rules vary depending on which type of borrower you are. The entire borrowing process is as follows:
Students at Uppsala University
1. Create a library account.
Read the borrowing rules before creating a library account. As a borrower, you are responsible for keeping yourself informed of any changes or updates to these rules and regulations.

2. Search for the material you want to borrow.
Use the Library Search Tool or our catalogues.
Are you going to borrow material from our special collections? Go to Request material from the special collections.
3. Request the material if necessary.
Material can be requested if it
- is already on loan
- is available, but placed in storage
Please allow one to two working days for the material to become available for collection.
Material cannot be requested if it
- is available and placed in an open stack.
Logging in
In order to request material via the Library Search Tool, you need to log in using your university ID and password A.
View or cancel a request
You can see your requests and your place in the queue in My Loans. You can also cancel requests there.
4. Pick up the material at the Library.
- If the material is available in an open stack, you are welcome to collect it yourself.
- If you have requested material, you will receive an email when it becomes available for you to borrow. You can also see this in My Loans.
- The message you receive when the book is available for pick-up states which date you need to pick up the book by. You usually have four days to pick up a course book, and seven days to collect a 30-day loan.
- We do not deliver books to anyone's place of residence.
5. Register the loan.
- Register the loan at a machine for loans or at an information desk. To log in to the machines, use your social security number or campus card and a PIN code. If you have forgotten your PIN code, you can create a new one in My Loans.
- If you are picking up a book for someone else, you need to show both your own and the borrower's ID.
6. Renew the loan.
Your loans are automatically renewed up to a certain time limit unless someone else requests the book:
- 7 day course book loans: 6 months.
- Other books: 1 year.
You can also renew books yourself by logging in to My Loans.
7. Return the loan.
- You can return books in all our libraries regardless of where you borrowed them. In some libraries you can return books even when the library in question is closed. See information about each library.
- Anyone can return your loan. They do not need to bring your library card.
- As a last resort, you can return a loan by post. Use a padded envelope marked with the address of the library. Note that you remain responsible for the loan until it reaches the library.
- As a service, the Library sends reminders and other messages (preferably via email). Unfortunately, we have no control over whether the messages actually reach you (due to spam filters, security updates, address changes, the postal service and so on). We would like to emphasise that you are always required to return or renew on time, regardless of whether you receive a notice from us or not.
Researchers and employees at Uppsala University
