Petitions

A hand writing. UUB 3538.

A petition is a letter to the king or other authority, which contains a request of some kind from an individual or a collective. All subjects—women and men, paupers and aristocrats—had the right to raise such grievances. They could also be presented orally and can then be reproduced in minutes or the authorities’ responses. Petitions can contain numerous and detailed information about people’s concrete livelihood activities. This applies not least to letters addressed to authorities governing various trade and industries
