Do you want to be Director of a new centre for the study of conflicting objectives?

In autumn 2024, the Vice-Chancellor plans to establish a centre for the study of conflicting objectives in sustainable societal transformations – the Uppsala Center for Sustainable Transformations (UUniCLASH).

How can conflicting objectives be managed?

The primary purpose of UUniCLASH is to establish internationally leading, multidisciplinary research that will develop new methods and knowledge on how to identify, analyse, weigh and manage conflicting objectives. The societal transitions at the heart of the centre are linked to a great extent to sustainable development. Major societal challenges require many types of transitions. Technical systems, forms of production, consumption patterns and lifestyles may need to change, as well as the way markets are regulated and policies are designed. Such changes can lead to synergies but also to conflicting objectives, which complicate or, in the worst case, block necessary transitions.

UUniCLASH will also be a physical meeting place for creative and cross-cutting activities within, across and beyond the University. It will be an inclusive space for science, academic discussions and collaboration.

Appointed for three-year period

The Director of UUniCLASH has been established as a fixed-term management position and is appointed by the Vice-Chancellor for a three-year period. The scope of the management assignment may vary over time but should initially amount to at least 50 percent.

Anyone who has received their doctorate and holds an indefinite-term position as a teacher or researcher at Uppsala University is eligible to become Director.
