About the programme
The Master's Programme in Molecular Medicine gives you in-depth knowledge about molecular and cellular mechanisms causing diseases, including genetic diseases and cancer, with special emphasis on epigenetic mechanisms. You will learn to independently analyse and interpret research results and data, generated by current methods and technologies. You will also learn techniques for developing novel molecular diagnostics and therapies with applications in healthcare, research and industry.
You will, together with international research groups, but also independently, work experimentally with different research projects. You will also develop your abilities to formulate and approach scientific problems, analyse, critically evaluate and present research results in different forums. During the programme, you will be trained in compiling research results into scientific writings and assessing the results of current knowledge in the field.
Throughout the entire programme, you will engage with lecturers and supervisors from both academia and industry, as well as from the nationwide research infrastructure SciLifeLab, who are scientists and experts in their field.
The programme provides a research-preparatory education intertwined with current research. Most graduates continue with PhD studies or jobs in the life science industry all over the world.
Student profile
As an applicant for the programme, you are very interested in the molecular mechanisms regulating cellular processes which can cause diseases as well as in methods used in diagnostics and therapies. You want to gain skills and interdisciplinary knowledge preparing you for international PhD studies or other jobs within academia or the Life Science industry.
You have completed your Bachelor's studies with a strong background in biochemistry, chemistry, cell and molecular biology as well as genetics. You have practical experience from lab work. You have excellent English skills and want to work in an international setting with colleagues from all over the world. You are curious, enjoy problem-solving, and are highly motivated to pursue a career in academic research or industry.
Degree
The programme leads to the degree of Master of Medical Science (120 credits) with Molecular Medicine as the main field of study.
Content
Year 1
During the first year, you will focus on molecular mechanisms and cellular processes causing genetic diseases including cancer as well as other diseases. You will learn about methods and technologies for assessing genetic and epigenetic variations, current clinical diagnostics and novel treatment approaches. You will study in-depth research-oriented problems in molecular medicine and be trained in experimental design and laboratory work. You will also be trained to evaluate and present research results in writing and in seminars. A seminar series will provide knowledge about research ethics, ethical approvals and other professional skills.
Applications and use of new sequencing technologies, bioinformatics and other analysis of research results in genomics and epigenetics are discussed as well as current methods in the analysis of proteins and identification of novel disease biomarkers. In the laboratory, you will, for example, study epigenetic changes using state-of-the-art methods as well as perform diagnostic analysis and cellular protein interactions using proximity ligation assay (PLA).
Throughout the programme, you will meet a large number of researchers and lecturers from different universities and companies, but also visit Life Science companies and clinical laboratories as well as participate in international conferences when possible.
Year 2
In the second year, you will learn digital analysis and diagnostics by molecular imaging. The course Regenerative Medicine discusses stem cell therapies, tissue engineering, generation of biomaterials, as well as novel cell- and immunotherapies against cancer and other human diseases. In the laboratory, you will perform in vitro differentiation of neuronal stem cells and generate iPSC models. If you are interested in research and in gaining laboratory experience, you can apply for short research projects.
The programme is concluded with an independent Master's Degree project in Molecular Medicine corresponding to 30 or 45 credits, which you undertake in an academic research group or in a company, in Sweden or abroad.
