What is an outline?

An outline (study plan) for a programme or a programme specialisation is an appendix to the programme syllabus and contains detailed information on the course of study. For programmes and specialisations that do not have outlines, the courses included are specified in the programme syllabus.

The outline is approved by the faculty responsible for the programme and may change from semester to semester. Within some faculties, it is the department responsible for the programme that determines the content of the study plan.

Which programme syllabus applies?

Each outline indicates the semester from which it is valid. Which outline that applies to you depends on how your programme makes use of study plans. You follow either the outline in effect during the semester in which you started the programme or the outline that takes effect in the autumn semester of the current academic year.

In-depth level

The outline specify the main field or fields of study to which a course belongs, together with a code indicating the in-depth level, such as G1F or A1N. A course's in-depth level indicates the education cycle, the first or second cycle. It also indicates the in-depth level of the course in relation to other courses within the same main field of study according to the requirements for general degrees.

First cycle

• G1N: has only upper-secondary level entry requirements
• G1F: has less than 60 credits in first-cycle course/s as entry requirements
• G1E: contains specially designed degree project for Higher Education Diploma
• G2F: has at least 60 credits in first-cycle course/s as entry requirements
• G2E: has at least 60 credits in first-cycle course/s as entry requirements, contains degree project for Bachelor of Arts/Bachelor of Science
  

Second cycle

• A1N: has only first-cycle course/s as entry requirements
• A1F: has second-cycle course/s as entry requirements
• A1E: contains degree project for Master of Arts/Master of Science (60 credits)
• A2E: contains degree project for Master of Arts/Master of Science (120 credits)
  

Periods

Within the Faculty of Science and Technology, the academic year is divided into four periods. In the outlines for the faculty’s programmes, it is indicated in which period or periods a course is offered.
Next to each course there is a grid with one square for each period. The period or periods in which the course is scheduled in the current semester are marked in green. If a period is marked in grey, it means that the course is given in that period during another semester (in which case the course is also listed under that semester). The number shown in the square indicates how many credits of the course belong to that particular period.

Examples:

1. The course is offered in period 1 during the current semester, and all 5 credits are taken in this period.

2. The course is offered in periods 3 and 4 during the current semester. Five credits are taken in period 3 and five credits in period 4.

3. The course is offered in periods 1 and 2 during the current semester, and in period 3 in the following semester. Ten credits are taken in period 1, five credits in period 2, and five credits in period 3.
