Greek and Byzantine Studies

The second-cycle studies in the main field of Greek and Byzantine Studies builds on the first-cycle studies in Greek. The second-cycle studies offers a comprehensive approach to classical and classicizing Greek throughout the ancient and Byzantine period but also leaves room for in-depth study of specific periods, genres and methodologies based on the department’s research environment and students’ individual interests – for example in connection with the thesis.
The courses offered include courses in grammar, and language history, broadening and deepening courses in prose and poetry, and thematic courses dealing with specific aspects of current research in Greek philology with a focus on theory and methods. Apart from the thesis, the available courses comprise 7.5 credits each. Some of the courses are periodised (not all courses are given in all semesters) but all courses are given within a two-year period, which is the normal time required for a Master’s degree.
Second-cycle studies in Greek and Byzantine Studies lead to a Master's degree, one or two years.
