General provisions

The course is given within the Master's Programme in Language Technology and as a freestanding course.

Entry requirements

A Bachelor's degree and (1) 60 credits in language technology/computational linguistics, or (2) 60 credits in computer science, or (3) 60 credits in a language subject, 7.5 credits in computer programming and 7.5 credits in logic/discrete mathematics. Knowledge of English equivalent to what is required for entry to Swedish first-cycle courses and study programmes.

Learning outcomes

On completion of the course, the student should to earn the grade Pass at least be able to:

  1. to explain in detail the most common techniques for indexing of text, classification of text, information extraction, and question answering;
  2. to explain various types of information retrieval models as well as the differences between them;
  3. to apply evaluation methods used in information retrieval;
  4. to analyse and critically review scientific publications in the field of information retrieval;
  5. to apply basic tools for indexing and information retrieval as well as to implement some of its methods;
  6. to formulate and critically discuss the methodological assumptions made by the approaches mentioned in the course and to present results in a professionally adequate way;

Instruction

The teaching consists of lectures and laboratory sessions under supervision.

Assessment

The course is examined by means of (1) assignments presented as lab reports, (2) a seminar presentation on themes covered in the course literature, and (3) a more independent project, possibly carried out by a group of students, presented in an academic report and at a seminar.

If there are special reasons for doing so, an examiner may make an exception from the method of assessment indicated and allow a student to be assessed by another method. An example of special reasons might be a certificate regarding special pedagogical support from the University's disability coordinator.
