Entry requirements

A Bachelor's degree, equivalent to a Swedish Kandidatexamen, from an internationally recognised university. The main field of study must be within the humanities or the social sciences. Proficiency in English equivalent to the Swedish upper secondary course English 6.

Learning outcomes

After completing the course, the student is expected to have achieved the following knowledge and skills:

• Knowledge about current and critical strategies in digital infrastructures for heritage
• The skill to critically engage with content management and representational platforms
• The skill to describe the organisational, financial, political, and ethical complexities of digitally rendering sensitive data or communicating contested and conflicted contexts
• The skill to engage with mixed methods for cultural heritage outreach.
• Knowledge about the existing strategic ethics and the importance of global cooperation in the GLAM sector

Content

The course provides students with an understanding of the processes and complexities of implementing digital technology for art and heritage. The course synthesizes theoretical perspectives drawn from aesthetics, museum and heritage studies with methods from information science and organisational studies. Throughout the course, students contemplate the digital transformation of art and heritage organisations and their collections. The course draws on concepts like cultural entrepreneurship, national and international policies, global initiatives and paradigms for digitization, organisation, representation and design, and enables students to present their own implementation plan.

In the course, great importance is attached to data organisation by cooperation, multivocality, and inclusion. Technology is approached with maintenance, sustainability, and re-usability in mind. Complexities of accessibility, sensitive material and vulnerability are addressed throughout the course.

Instruction

The course consists of lectures, seminars, fieldwork, workshops and group site visits. Participation in seminars, workshops and group site visits are mandatory. Absence from any of these will need to be compensated.

Assessment

The course is assessed by participation in seminars and workshops, as well as written assignments on final group project.

Final grades are based on assessment of results from the examination elements.

Taking off from group site visits and fieldwork in the sector, students will develop a portfolio for the final group assignment to demonstrate the understanding of key theoretical concepts and analytical tools, introduced throughout of the course.

Active participation in the examined seminars is a requirement fulfiling the course requirements. Any student who misses a single compulsory teaching element will be required to submit a supplementary assignment, the scope of which will reflect the workload that would have been required to actively participate in the teaching element in question.

Generally speaking, the course will include one ordinary examination opportunity plus one retake. The date of the retake will also be the deadline for submitting supplementary assignments. Thereafter, students will be referred to the next occasion on which the course is held, which as a rule will be during the following academic year.

Students who wish to complete supplementary assignments from a previous course will preferably be given an assignment based on current course content.

All elements of the course will be assessed with one of the grades fail, pass or pass with distinction.

If there are special reasons for doing so, an examiner may make an exception from the method of assessment indicated and allow a student to be assessed by another method. An example of special reasons might be a certificate regarding special pedagogical support from the University's disability coordinator.
