Learning outcomes

The course intends to give a basic knowledge of the political history of the Turkic peoples and the cultural, social and economic circumstances of the related regions.

For the grade of Pass, on completion of the course students should be able to

knowledge and understanding

  • describe the early Turkic peoples of Asia and Europe in pre-Islamic times at a general level
  • describe the development of the nomadic empires and their relation to neighbouring sedentary civilisations at a general level
  • describe the historical development of the Turkic peoples under the Mongols at a general level
  • describe historical and political developments in Central Asia in relation to other political formations of the region at a general level
  • list the main features of the development of the Ottoman Empire in its early periods
  • describe the political development of the Ottoman Empire in its later periods at a general level
  • describe the Turkish Republic's foundation and development in its early period at a general level
  • list the main features of political and social conditions in the Turkish Republic
  • give examples of the Christianisation and Islamisation of the Turkic peoples

competence and skills

  • plan and carry out a small assignment
  • seek, collect and analyse different types of texts related to the history, culture and social progress of the Turkic peoples
  • write coherent academic texts
  • use an adequate reference system

judgement and approach

  • critically evaluate and problematise different perspectives on historical phenomena and processes as given in the course literature
  • compare historical developments with contemporary events.

Content

The course includes studies in the early and modern political history of the Turkic peoples and an overview of the cultural, social and economic circumstances of the related regions. In addition, a basic introduction is given to the methodology of historical studies. The course also contains training in generic proficiencies such as writing coherent academic texts and critical thinking.

Instruction

The instruction consists of lectures, exercises and assessment. The students' own learning activities are crucial for their work during the course.

Assessment

The course has two assessment components:

  1. a short essay
  2. an online written final examination.

For the grade Pass, Pass is required in all components. For the grade Pass with distinction, Pass with distinction is furthermore required in component 2. The grading scale for component 1 is Fail-Pass. The grading scale for component 2 is Fail-Pass-Pass with distinction.

If there are special reasons for doing so, an examiner may decide to make an exception from the method of assessment indicated and allow a student to be assessed by another method. Special circumstances can include notification of special educational support from the University's disability coordinator.
