Science communication
We reflect on the impact of research and our understanding of science. We support uptake or research results with tailored science communication tools and tactics for different stakeholder groups.
Science communication and research impact
Responsible research and innovation practice in multi-disciplinary and multi-stakeholder research requires a joint understanding of the values at stake. We explore risk communication and develop recommendations through research. We have also developed a model for research communication for our ethics blogs and projects. We also provide training, building researchers' own capacity to communicate their expertise, and teach popular science writing.
Uppsala University's Ethics Blog
We disseminate knowledge through the Ethics Blog, and the Swedish language etikbloggen. Together, the blogs reach around 7,000 readers. We write about research at the Centre and reflect further on the questions that are raised by science and research. The blogs support outreach, both within and outside academia. The blogs provide training and skills in popular science writing for our researchers, foster reflection and stimulates open dialogue on ethical issues by asking open questions.
Using open questions to communicate
Our approach to communication starts from the questions that drive research and innovation. Asking questions helps develop a context that makes results understandable, and stimulates discussion on how science and research can help solve problems. Communication also plays an important role for scientists, by providing a richer understanding of the role that science plays in society. Starting from open questions allows us to approach complex ethical issues from several directions, and contribute to a more open climate for discussion and debate. Questions can also help reduce fear and tension in relation to scientific and technological developments.
Science communication and research impact
Our communicators are developing strategy and plan for communication, result dissemination and impact for the Centre. We are also engaged in European projects, where we contribute in all stages of the process: form the development of research proposals, managing communications and taking an operative role, to leading communication and dissemination work packages.
EU-projects that use our approach
Science communicators
Josepine Fernow
Science communicator, project manager, communications strategist and CRB coordinator. Develops strategy and plan for science communication and research impact at the center and in EU-funded research consortia.
Pär Segerdahl
Associate professor of philosophy and editor of Uppsala University’s Ethics Blog. Researches how philosophy can support thoughtfulness in debates about ethically sensitive issues, and chairs the research seminar.
Anna Holm Bodin
Science communicator and responsible for the Centre's web and social media. Responsible for communication in several EU-funded research consortia.
Research on risk communication
Jessica Nihlén Fahlquist
Teaches ethics at the molecular biology and medical doctors programmes. Senior lecturer in biomedical ethics and Associate Professor in practical philosophy, with a research focus on moral responsibility in various fields.
Åsa Grauman
Researches how individuals perceive health risks and how we are affected by risk information, including through preference studies, with a focus on breast cancer, bowel cancer, precision medicine, and screening for rare diseases.
Mirko Ancillotti
Reseach on public health, ethics, and patient preferences. Works with questions about the effect of lighting, cancer patient preferences, and antibiotic resistance.
