Honoring Prof. Kidanto: A Celebration of Excellence in Maternal and Newborn health

Prof. Kidanto, a globally recognized expert in obstetrics and gynaecology from Aga Khan University, Tanzania, was awarded an honorary doctorate at Uppsala University. An honorary doctorate, or doctor honoris causa, is conferred upon individuals who have made significant contributions to research and have established valuable ties with the Swedish academic community.

Prof. Kidanto delivered an inspiring lecture titled “Improving Quality of Maternal and Newborn Care in Low Resource Settings” in the main university building on the 30 January 2025. In his talk, he highlighted his pioneering work that adapts clinical practices and technological advancements to the local needs of resource-limited settings, transforming healthcare outcomes for vulnerable women and children across Africa.

The following day, during the winter conferment ceremony on 31 January 2025, he was formally honored with the doctorate. The celebration continued with a dinner in the castle. The festivities continued with a relaxed mingle at Birgitta Esséns’ house, where guests—including colleagues and former collaborators with extensive experience in Tanzanina, gathered to honor his impactful contributions to Maternal and Newborn health.
