Alumni activities at the Faculty of Science and Technology

Alumni, students and university all have a lot to gain having well organised alumni activities: links with the world of work, recruitment, and pride in the educational programme and profession.

A number of alumni activities are organised within Uppsala University. For example, alumni are invited as guest lecturers and mentors, alumni associations organise social gatherings, international chapters celebrate Walpurgis (“Valborg”), and alumni participate in the students’ labour market days. Many activities are best organised “by alumni for alumni” while others work best for individual educational programs. Some activities should be organised on a Faculty or University-wide basis while some projects are best organised by students. The role of the Faculty Office is to support and coordinate the activities, partly to provide an overview and partly to make it easier for alumni and students to take advantage of what is on offer.

This page contains information and documents related to alumni activities at the Faculty of Science and Technology. Information aimed at the Faculty’s alumni is collected on the Faculty’s external webpage.

All University-wide alumni activities are coordinated by the Development Office. They manage the university’s external alumni website, administer the alumni network and its associations and provide overall support to departments and programs.

Do you have good examples of what you work with? If so, please contact the Faculty Office’s alumni coordinator.

To make it easier for the University to stay in contact with alumni, they need to register in the alumni network. Please encourage current students and PhD students to register!

To facilitate the alumni work, the Faculty office has a coordinator for alumni issues, whose responsibilities are listed below. There is also a guide for alumni work and in the document library (requires login with email address and password A) you will find a number of documents related to alumni activities.

Role of the Alumni Coordinator

The alumni coordinator is responsible for or supports the following tasks:

  • faculty-wide strategies and procedures
  • coordination of activities within the faculty
  • assistance with searches in the alumni network and on LinkedIn
  • coordinating and conducting alumni surveys
  • organization of some faculty-wide alumni activities
  • the Faculty's alumni newsletters each semester
  • the Faculty's alumni-related presence on LinkedIn
  • the Faculty's alumni webpage.

Please contact the alumni coordinator if you need contact details of alumni or if you want to discuss thoughts and ideas.

Guidebook

The alumni work guide (requires login with email address and password A) contains:

  • suggestions for activities for teachers, departments, program responsible professors, and study counselors.
  • tips on how to get in touch with alumni
  • an overview of the faculty's alumni activities.

Support material for organizing "mini-mentoring programs"

There is also support material for organizing "mini-mentoring programs" (requires login with email address and password A), where students can meet alumni. Choose parts that suit your activity or use the material as it is.

University-wide alumni activities

All university-wide alumni activities are coordinated by the Development Office. They manage the university's external alumni website, administer the alumni network and its associations, and provide overall support to departments and programs.

Externally, the Alumni Network is described as "a global network for all former students and staff members of Uppsala University. The network offers you a way to keep in touch with the university and former classmates, as well as opportunities to meet new friends and give back to your Alma Mater. " This description is based on that we invite alumni to various activities via the alumni network and that there are several independent alumni associations that have their membership registers in the alumni network.

The alumni network is gathered in a CRM system from Microsoft Dynamics linked to Ladok and the population register. This makes it possible to obtain current e-mail addresses for alumni sorted by programme, place of residence, degree year and much more. The faculty's alumni coordinator is happy to help, for example, programme responsible professors, study counsellors and departments to search for alumni, as well as to support the student union. The alumni network is based on consent and personal data is handled according to current rules. The network is reviewed annually and alumni whose email address bounces receive a postal mailing with a request to update their information or be removed.

As part of the evaluation of our programs, the Office of Science and Technology conducts program/department-specific surveys aimed at faculty alumni. The alumni surveys precede the faculty’s program surveys. The programs/departments are involved in the work and have the opportunity to add program/department-specific questions.

Compilations and data from previous alumni surveys (requires login as a university staff member):

The evaluation of education programs starts with a newcomer survey, is followed by a program survey and ends with an alumni survey. For doctoral education, the university-wide supervisor and doctoral student surveys are used.

The goals were developed in the Faculty Office's alumni project and the project also clarified the opportunities available to alumni, students and the Faculty. These were presented at a faculty meeting and can be found in the document library (requires login with email address and password A).

Brief objective

Our vision for alumni engagement is to perfect our mission as their alma mater and create lifelong relationships with our alumni that strengthen both parties.

More detailed objective

Our mission as an alma mater is to create lifelong relationships with our alumni that strengthen both parties.

We achieve this through high-quality education and by permitting our alumni to have an obvious place in the work we do in education, research and third stream activities.

We highlight alumni in our activities so that our students and doctoral students will see the University as an obvious part of their lifelong learning and will want to give back to us.
