Reach out with your research

Below we list the Faculty of Science and Technology's collaborative activities aimed at schools and the public, where you as a researcher have the chance to participate and reach out with your research. All activities are organised by the Unit for Communication and School Collaboration at the Office of Science and Technology.

In this exhibition visitors will in an interactive way learn and experience physical laws, technical phenomena and the basics that modern research builds upon. Each part of the exhibit is connected to an institution at Ångström Lab, and through the exhibition and connecting web material, contemporary research being made at ångström is shown. A historical part of the exhibition showcases the Ångström family's research, as well as a small glimpse of education and research from a historical perspective.

As a researcher you may use the exhibition in various ways. You may choose to become a guide in the exhibition and recieve visiting schools, and you can also choose to use the exhibition freely in your own way. Centrally placed and accessible, the exhibition can be used in whole or by choosing certain parts, to demonstrate and illustrate research in a light and accessible way.

To become a guide in the exhibition you contact us and will recieve a short course, as well as continuing support in the work as guide. To use the exhibition in your own work no education is needed, and you can freely make use of the exhibition whenever no guided shows are taking place. We are here as a support for this as well, and if you wish we are glad to help and work together with you to find your own way of communicating and sharing research with the help of the exhibition.

At the Center for Programming (Ångström/ITC) we offer further training in Programming for teachers in elementary school, upper secondary school and preschool. The workshops are led by researchers at Uppsala University, who through this work gets the opportunity to meet teachers and gather material for their own research. The workshops are shaped so that they contribyte both to scientific research as well as filling the needs of the teachers for further knowledge and inspiration.

As a researcher you have the possibility to hold workshops and/or be a speaker on one of our events coordinated by the Center for Programming. The aim is to create a win win-situation for both researchers and schools. As a workshop leader you shape your own workshop based on your research needs, and support is always accessible. You choose how long you want to continue working, many researchers stay for years to gather the material, but shorter periods are equally possible.

We offer study visits for secondary school classes, companies and the general public. Our researchers give popular science lectures on these occasions and we also offer guided tours of the campus and laboratories. Based on available resources, we tailor the visits to the visitors' wishes. Our visit programmes are mostly aimed at upper secondary school students and therefore most of the popular science lectures are given in Swedish. In addition to study visits, popular science lectures are also given at our Research Day for upper secondary schools in November.

Citizen science is a rapidly growing phenomenon in which non-researchers participate in research through collaboration with professional researchers. This is an exciting way to gain an understanding of research in general among the general public, but at the same time raise awareness / knowledge within a certain subject area for a specific target group. In addition, Citizen science can provide direct support to research by being able to capture large amounts of data in a short time. With some continuity, activities are arranged aimed at the target group as schools.

When it's time for a new mass experiment, we ask interested researchers in a certain predetermined area. Thereafter, the current project is developed together with the current research team and support team.

The support for the researchers consists of a developed infrastructure consisting of:

  • Budget for support function
  • Selection and contact with target group
  • Marketing
  • Visibility
  • Project management
  • Experience from previous projects

SciFest – Uppsala's annual science festival

SciFest is a science festival with the aim of arousing curiosity about science in children and young people as well as making the university's work visible and reducing the distance between academia and society. It is a university-wide project arranged together with the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences. SciFest lasts for three days, two of which are open to the school (middle school-gymnasium) and one day that is open to the general public.

SciFest is arranged in Fyrishov's multi-halls where visitors are offered to participate in bookable workshops and take part in non-bookable activities. They are also offered a stage program where science shows and lectures take turns. The activities' subject should be close to everyday life and designed so that the visitor can test and experience the activity. A visit to SciFest should evoke a wow-feeling and a desire to learn more about what you have experienced.

As a researcher at Uppsala University, you have the opportunity to participate as an exhibitor or stage performer at SciFest. We offer you help with concretizing your idea and how it can be presented in a way that is educational and interesting for the target group. You are given the opportunity to practice your popular science ability by interacting with, and explaining your research, to people of all ages. In addition to this, you get the opportunity to meet other researchers and take part of their research.
