Winners of the 2024 Distinguished Teaching Awards announced
The winners of this year’s Uppsala University Distinguished Teaching Awards teach in literature, law, microbiology and mathematics. The Free Distinguished Teaching Award, on the theme “Education for an evolving future world of work”, goes to Anne-Christine Norlén, lecturer at the Department of Archives, Libraries and Museums.
The recipients of the Distinguished Teaching Awards are selected from nominations made by students and colleagues. The final selection is made by the Vice-Chancellor after proposals from a preparatory committee.
The free award goes to Lecturer Anne-Christine Norlén at the Department of Archives, Libraries and Museums (ALM). The theme this year is “Education for an evolving future world of work”.
Anne-Christine Norlén consciously strives for a pedagogy that promotes interaction between education and a changing world of work. The students benefit in their learning from her good contacts with alumni who contribute in the teaching situation and help put the educational content in the context of a rapidly changing field. With the breadth of her expertise and clarity of her teaching, she provides all students with good conditions for learning. Students who benefit from Anne-Christine’s multifaceted and up-to-date view of the field develop into reflective practitioners.
Theology, humanities and educational sciences
Senior Lecturer Janne Lindqvist at the Department of Literature and Rhetoric has been awarded the 2024 Distinguished Teaching Award in the area of theology, humanities and educational sciences.
Janne Lindqvist is a teacher with an excellent teaching and learning compass. He is an important role model for the subject of rhetoric and stimulates the creativity and critical perspectives of students by lectures and seminars which cannot fail to engage them. He participates actively in the development of teaching and learning at the department and has a clear vision for students’ learning. Janne’s teaching is always distinguished by a clear scholarly basis, stringent demands, well-reflected structure and great accessibility.
Law and social sciences
Senior Lecturer Therése Fridström Montoya at the Department of Law has been awarded the 2024 Distinguished Teaching Award in the area of law and social sciences.
Therése Fridström Montoya is an educator who meets the students with warm interest in all her teaching. In the classroom, she allows possible solutions for legal problems to emerge on the board in dialogue with the students in a way that ensures that everyone feels seen and able to contribute. Her teaching is grounded in deep material knowledge and builds on experience of the demands the students will face in their future professional life.
Medicine and pharmacy
Professor Linus Sandegren at the Department of Medical Biochemistry and Microbiology has been awarded the 2024 Distinguished Teaching Award in the domain of Medicine and Pharmacy.
Linus Sandegren is a skilful teacher with infectious enthusiasm. Regardless of whether the students are in the biomedicine, medicine or pharmacy programme, he awakens their passion for bacteriology. The appreciation that students feel for his dedication to their learning is reflected in the many teaching awards he has received over the years. Linus contributes actively in clear-sighted and structured ways to course and programme development, to the benefit of students and fellow teachers. In addition, his lectures on antibiotics issues at upper secondary schools and other institutions open the eyes of the wider community to the importance of this topic.
Mathematics, natural sciences and technology
Senior Lecturer Anna Sakovich at the Department of Mathematics has been awarded the 2024 Distinguished Teaching Award in the area of mathematics, natural sciences and technology.
Anna Sakovich’s teaching in mathematics is distinguished by skill, accessibility and a great commitment to students’ learning. Using clear structures and methods that activate the students, she shares her thorough knowledge of the subject and makes complex connections comprehensible. Anna’s effective use of interactive teaching and learning tools during lectures reinforces students’ participation and inclusion in the classroom, and contributes to an interactive learning environment that offers scope to answer and enlarge on every question, which meets with great appreciation on the part of the students.

The Distinguished Teaching Awards
Each year, Uppsala University presents distinguished teaching awards for outstanding contributions in undergraduate education according to specific nomination categories.
Four of the awards are given to teachers in the following areas:
- Theology, humanities and educational sciences
- Law and social sciences,
- Medicine and pharmacy,
- Mathematics, natural sciences and technology.
The fifth prize is awarded for educational contributions in an area chosen for special priority that year.
