Degree project in a technical engineering programme
Students writing a degree project within a technical bachelor's or master's programme must follow a set of common guidelines and instructions. These apply to all technical programmes.
Program-specific additions
In addition to the common guidelines and instructions for degree projects, there are also programme-specific additions. Find out what these are by contacting the examiner/coordinator for the degree project course in your program.
Before you can start
Start by familiarizing yourself with the prerequisite requirements, the course syllabus content, and the guidelines that apply to the degree project.
The common guidelines and instructions for degree projects describe the tasks and responsibilities of the examiner, supervisor, and subject reviewer.
If you have not yet decided what you want to write your degree project about, you can find previously published degree projects in DiVA for tips and inspiration.
Propose a project
Once you have found a degree project, you should prepare a proposal for a preliminary project plan together with your intended supervisor.
Present your proposal to your examiner or coordinator. The examiner will decide whether your project is reasonable and relevant. You are also encouraged to suggest a suitable subject reviewer.
Discuss the project plan with your subject reviewer, revise it if necessary, and establish a schedule. The schedule should preferably include how you and your subject reviewer will stay in contact during the course of the project. Together, you should also review the course objectives and how your project will fulfill them.

Apply for the degree project
How you apply for the degree project course varies between programmes.
Find out how your program handles this by contacting the examiner/coordinator. Contact details can be found at the bottom of this page.
You can only start your work once your application has been approved by the examiner and you are registered for the degree project course.
The application must include information about:
- Supervisor
- Subject reviewer
- Examiner
- Start and end date
- Any collaboration agreement
If possible, sign the form with an electronic signature.
Collaboration agreement form:
- If the project owner in an external degree project requests an agreement between their organization, the student, and Uppsala University, there is a form for agreements with external project owners (DOCX) docx, 35 kB..
- If required, there is also a form for agreements between the student and the project owner within Uppsala University pdf, 119 kB. (PDF).
During the project
Stay in regular contact with your supervisor and subject reviewer as agreed.
Plan your written report well in advance and review the preliminary version with your supervisor and subject reviewer. When your report is nearing completion and the subject reviewer gives approval, you should start planning your presentation.
Use the following templates for the cover page and abstract:
The abstract must not exceed half a page and must be written in English. The third page of the report should be a popular science summary of 1–2 pages written in Swedish.
Project presentation
The degree project is examined through an oral presentation, opposition, and a written report. You must send the report to the examiner and the opponent within the specified timeframe before the presentation. Notify in advance if your presentation requires confidentiality. Remember that the subject reviewer, examiner, and opponent must be able to attend your oral presentation.
Before the presentation, your report will be checked for plagiarism.
In addition to your own presentation, you are also required to act as an opponent for another degree project before you can be approved.
After your presentation, you make any necessary corrections to the written report and have the subject reviewer approve the final version. The report is then sent to the examiner for final approval.
Once the opposition, presentation, and report have been approved, you pass the course.
Publication and reporting
Once you have passed your degree project, you must upload the report to DiVA.
First, you need to create a serial number for your degree project to include on the cover page of the report. After that, you can upload the final version of the report to DiVA. Instructions are provided for how to upload your report.
When uploading your report, you choose whether it should be published immediately, published at a later date, or archived.
If the degree project is confidential or has a delayed publication, it should still be uploaded to DiVA as usual, but you must clearly indicate the confidentiality in the form.
Normally, your credits will be registered in Ladok once you have passed the degree project course and your report has been published or archived in DiVA.
When you finished your degree project
- Apply for your degree certificate when you meet the degree requirements.
- Register in the alumni network.
- Find out about the next graduation ceremony and register for it.
