The Master's Programme in Information Systems combines a strong focus on systems development with a critical perspective on the broader individual, organisational, and societal contexts. The skills you acquire will make you an attractive candidate for positions such as software engineer/developer, product owner, business analyst, project manager, or information systems researcher. This skill set gives you a significant edge over purely technical profiles in the information technology (IT) field.

You will be empowered to move beyond coding to strategically develop software with a deep understanding of its real-world implications. You will become a leader in digital transformation, adept at managing change, and a problem-solver capable of tackling complex challenges by integrating critical analysis of context, technology, and situational constraints.

During the programme, you can expect to:

  • drive digital transformation initiatives and manage change effectively,
  • move beyond coding to strategically develop software with a deep understanding of its real-world implications.
  • combine a strong focus on systems development with a critical perspective on the broader individual, organisational, and societal contexts.

Student profile

You have a background which includes (management of) information systems or computer science and mathematics. You have an interest in developing intelligent technology with a holistic systems perspective that includes individuals, organisations, and society. You are creative, curious, and enjoy problem-solving and working in teams.

Degree

The programme leads to the degree of Master of Social Science (120 credits) with Information Systems as the main field of study.

In the first semester, you will learn the systematic design and development of complex software systems, explore digitalisation and digital innovation, and analyse their impact on individuals, organisations, and society. You will develop an understanding of both the internal and external aspects of information systems.

In the second semester, you will apply the skills gained in the first semester to solve real-world case problems. You will learn and gain experience in conducting digital transformation initiatives through project management, data governance, and agile software development practices.

The third semester advances your studies by exploring the foundations of artificial intelligence, machine learning, and generative AI. You will learn how to practically develop AI-based systems and strategically integrate them into existing IT systems. The semester concludes with a course on research methods to prepare you for your degree project by equipping you with the knowledge and skills to study digital phenomena.

In your fourth and final semester, you will combine your programme learning and unique personal experiences in an in-depth, independent information systems research project. This capstone project culminates in the writing and publication of your Master’s thesis dissertation. Research projects can be conducted with a company or organisation. In the past, we have had students write their thesis with companies such as Ericsson, Scania, and King (the developer of Candy Crush Saga!).

Courses within the programme

Refer to the programme outline for details on the courses within the programme.

The programme will be conducted in Uppsala, primarily at Uppsala University’s Ekonomikum Campus.

Our courses are led by members of our information systems faculty and feature a rich blend of lectures, seminars, and practical assignments. You will be assessed using a variety of methods, including written examinations, oral examinations, lab sessions, and project assignments, some of which may include group examinations, case studies, and written assignments.

As a Master’s student, you will be responsible for your learning and will be expected to participate in all taught sessions throughout the programme actively. A large part of your time will be spent studying on your own or with your classmates outside of the classroom. You will be expected to be proactive in planning your studies beyond the scheduled course activities.

Our graduates have gone on to work at leading international companies, such as Deloitte, Amazon, and Accenture, as systems architects, AI engineers, and data scientists, among others.

Some have gone on to build on their Master’s degree by pursuing a doctoral degree (PhD) in Information Systems.

Salaries in Sweden can vary significantly depending on factors such as education level, job role, previous experience, location, and sector. According to statistics from one of Sweden's largest labour unions, SACO, the average salary of systems developers in 2025 was SEK 45,000 per month before tax.

Career support

During your time as a student, UU Careers offers support and guidance. You have the opportunity to take part in a variety of activities and events that will prepare you for your future career.
