Literature and society cannot easily be separated. Urgent social questions concerning such factors as class, gender and ethnicity have been frequently raised by literary texts. Throughout the course students will read literature and analyse how the works studied represent social and historical dilemmas, problems and change. This course has two general aims. The first is that students develop their own understanding and knowledge about literary representation and the social and historical contexts in which literary works appear. The second is that students reflect critically on the pedagogy of teaching literature. This combination results in a course in which students must engage with the social and critical pedagogical questions raised by literature.
