On Friday April 26, the Uppsala AGORA network organized a workshop titled Rom i Norr. Four speakers will discuss and explore the influence of Rome in northern Europe and Scandinavia. Through coins, architecture, glass and stunning archaeological finds we will get to know the notion of Rome in the north.

The workshop will take place at the English Park Campus in room 2-0076, 14.15-18.00 including a break for coffee. Enclosed you can find a poster of the event and the abstracts of the speakers. Also, please note that three presentations will be given in English and one in Swedish.

The Sixth International Conference of Egyptian linguistics (Crossroads VI) will be held at the University of Uppsala in 20-22 January 2020. The programme and further information about the event may be found here. The aim of the conference, which for the first time has a specific theme, is to bring together scholars working on the technical linguistic analysis of the Egyptian-Coptic language and those whose interest lies primarily in the more philological study of texts

On September 16, the inauguration symposium of the new Center for Indo-European Language and Cultural Studies, takes place at SCAS (Swedish Collegium for Advanced Studies) in Uppsala. It is arranged in close collaboration with the RJ program LAMP (Languages and Myths of Prehistory).

The establishment of the center was decided by the rector of Stockholm University on 1 July 2021. It will function as a national resource for researchers interested in working with Indo-European languages and cultures in an interdisciplinary perspective. In recent years, Indo-European studies has re-emerged as a dynamic and creative international research field, with great future potential, not least in the wake of the revolutionary development within aDNA. The center's ambition is to further develop this research and to re-establish comparative, interdisciplinary Indo-European research in Sweden, a field that has largely been lacking here in modern times.

Director of the Center for Indo-European Language and Cultural Studies is Jenny Larsson, Professor of Baltic languages at Stockholm University. The undersigned is chairman of its board and in that role I would like to warmly invite you to this event and at the same time spread knowledge about the center's existence and its role as a national research resource.

The number of physical participants at the symposium is unfortunately very limited, due to current pandemic restrictions, but it also takes place in the form of a webinar (see link below) with an unlimited number of participants. All interested are very welcome to participate in this way, in a very interesting afternoon with presentation of new exciting research results about the early Indo-Europeans.

Institutionen för arkeologi och antik historia och Museum Gustavianum åtnjuter fantastiska samlingar med arkeologiska fynd från olika platser i världen. Vår undervisning bygger på god kännedom om olika typer av källor i kombination med en ett nyfiket sinne. På initiativ av studentföreningen Fjölnir anordnade institutionen en workshop om keramik onsdagen den 12 februari 2020. Workshopen blev fulltecknad på 48 timmar. Den ingår inte i någon kurs, utan bygger just på nyfikenhet och glädje att samlas kring ett gemensamt tema. Under handledning av fyra experter arbetade 20 studenter hela dagen med keramik från tre utgrävningar i Sverige och en i Grekland. Studenter i arkeologi studerade fynden från Broby (bronsålder), Valsgärde (vendel- och viktingatid) och Studentholmen (medeltid), medan studenter i antikens kultur och samhällsliv arbetade med keramik från Asine på nordöstra Peloponnesos (bronsålder, hellenistisk-romersk tid).

The #metoo movement affirmed that gender inequality is not an
artefact of the past. In Sweden, the sister movement
#excavationinprogress has highlighted the pervasiveness of gender-
based discrimination within archaeology. These long-standing
disparities have not only adversely impacted the composition and
disciplinary culture of the community practising archaeology, they have
also circumscribed scientific inquiries into the past. One of the early
aims of gender archaeology was to direct scholarly attention to the lives
of women in the past and thus diversify our understanding of past
experience. Today, gender archaeology strives to advance multivocal
perspectives, reflected in our interpretations of the past as well as the
process and practice of scientific inquiry itself.

The aim of this conference, organised by PhD candidates in
Archaeology, is to reintroduce gendered perspectives to a new
generation of scholars by bringing together researchers at the forefront
of modern gender archaeology and adjacent areas of study. This will be
an open and inclusive venue where scholars at different academic
career stages are invited to participate and contribute towards the
development of future research trajectories. Invited speakers will
engage with culturally and regionally diverse case studies spanning
from ancient Nubia and Greece to the Scandinavian Viking and Middle
Ages, touching upon themes such as gender theory, religion, battlefield
archaeology, maritime archaeology, ancient demography, and ecology.

The conference, to be held in English, is planned as an on-campus event
at Uppsala University in collaboration with Campus Gotland. In addition, it will also be available on Zoom. The conference will take place on 13–14 October 2022 in the Ihre Hall, located at Campus Engelska Parken (Thunbergsvägen 3P, Uppsala, Sweden). Both days start at 9 am and end at 5 pm. Tea and coffee will be served to all participants, and lunch is available (at own expense) at the campus restaurant Matikum.

We encourage participation from a wide spectrum of scholars from
within the Humanities, including students, PhD candidates, and faculty
members, as well as representatives from the museum sector, contract
archaeology, and the like. We welcome you all warmly!

New perspectives on Italian ceramics: production locations, households and votive deposits
