Plasma activated hydrogel bioinks for 3D printing tissue-specific scaffolds
My project develops a dual-purpose biocompatible hydrogel that captures and controls the release of reactive species generated by cold atmospheric plasma. This biomaterial aims to kill bacteria via oxidative stress without the need of antibiotics, and can be used as base to develop a bioink for 3D printing applications in tissue engineering.
Background
My passion for biomaterials grew during my Bachelor’s and Master’s in Materials Science and Engineering, thanks to two Erasmus experiences. In Germany, I took biomaterials and 3D printing courses, while in Spain, I worked on my final thesis titled: “Surface and hydrogel modification of biodegradable zinc alloys for medical applications”. Afterwards, I joined Johnson & Johnson innovative medicine in Italy as a manufacturing intern to learn how a leading multinational operates.
