Magnesium Metallic Glasses for Bone Replacement, Enabled by Additive Manufacturing

Some bone injuries need an implant that doesn't stay forever. I’m working on metal 3D-printing of magnesium alloys designed to dissolve safely in the body as bone heals, tuning their internal structure so they're strong enough to hold the bone and timed to degrade in step with the healing process, with an aim to remove the need for a second surgery just to take the implant back out.
Background
I hold an M.S. in Mechanical Engineering from Iowa State University, where I worked on metal additive manufacturing (large-scale WAAM and laser-DED of duplex stainless steels). My research focused on how processing parameters affect microstructure, defect content, and mechanical performance of deposited material. The work resulted in two first-author papers (Materials Science and Engineering: A; JOM), another first-author manuscripts under review, and several co-authored papers currently in preparation.
