Why this programme?
The aim of the Master's Programme in Industrial Management and Innovation is to educate future leaders in a holistic perspective of the complex innovation processes within and around technology-intensive companies. The industrial landscape of today is facing increased competition, rapid changes in demands, political and regulatory instability, along with growing environmental and societal challenges. To remain competitive in this complex setting, it is important to be at the forefront of innovation and business development.
Innovation is a complex process that not only entails new technology but is also connected to economy, organisation and society. Our goal is that students who have completed the programme will be able to combine a deep understanding of new technology and business with a strong practical knowledge of how innovations can be managed in technology-intensive companies.
During the programme you can expect to:
- have a close connection to both industry and research,
- train to handle technical, societal and economical dimensions of the innovation process.
After completing the programme, you will have knowledge to resolve the following questions, amongst other things:
- Business: What is needed for innovations to generate money? How do you estimate the economic value of new products? What investments should your company pursue?
- Product development: How do you go from an exciting idea to a realised product? What are the requirements for the products to be launched within reasonable limits in terms of money, time and quality?
- Marketing: How do you analyse markets? How do you understand customers and build customer relationships to successfully market technological products and services?
- Organisation and leadership: How do you organise and lead the innovation process? How do you manage interactions within and between complex organisations, both in terms of formal and informal structures?
- Project management: How do you lead innovative projects? How do you share know-how between temporary projects and permanent organisations?
- Societal aspects: How do you ensure that the innovation work goes hand-in-hand with concerns of societal well-being, ethics, and environmental responsibility?
- Presentation skills: How do you most successfully present your ideas and proposals to a variety of audiences, including boards of directors, partners, managers, and co-workers?
A unique feature of this programme is that it is close to both industry and research. The students of the programme come from different technological backgrounds and are trained to handle technical, societal and economical dimensions of the innovation process.
Student profile
You have a Bachelor's degree in engineering, and you might have studied a few courses within the field of industrial management. You might have some practical experience working in the field after earning your Bachelor's degree but you have not forgotten your broad theoretical base and study techniques. You are now looking for an education that gives you a theoretical understanding and practical tools for working with management related issues in technology-based companies.

Why did you choose to come and study in Sweden?
– In the beginning, I just heard that Sweden is one of the Scandian countries with an excellent education system. And it is offering a scholarship. I also use and see the product of Swedish companies like buses from Scania, clothing lines like H&M, and even Spotify.
Why did you choose to study this programme?
– I have a background in IT. Previously, I worked as a project manager in a software house company in my country. During my working period, I saw that I needed to study, learn more about management and related things. I looked for the best university in Sweden, and I found Uppsala University. That’s how I found the programme on the university’s website.
What is the best about studying at Uppsala University?
– The university is located in a student city. So, it is perfect for students to hang out, study, or do great things here. We can easily find cafés in the city center if you want to fika with friends or just do your study stuff. Uppsala is also friendly for biking so that you can go around the town with your bike. Just make sure you lock it up, tho!
How does a normal day look like for you?
– It is kind of amazing and annoying at the same time when in Uppsala, you never know about the weather! It can be forecasted to be rain, yet it is sunny a whole day. Or the other way around, haha. But still I love to go around the town with my bike.
What has been the most fun and interesting so far
– Uppsala may not have a big mall, but it has a great nature! I love to go to the forest and pick up some wild mushrooms!
What is typical for your programme?
– We intensively discuss many things ranging from innovation, management, industrial, accountant, supply chain, marketing, and so on. The teachers build an environment for the students to be able to think critically and innovatively. Sometimes, they invite people from the industry to tell their stories, inspire us, and discuss the real situation in the market.
How was it coming to Sweden for the first time?
– Because It was my first time visiting a European country, it was mesmerizing for me, yet, when the winter came, it shocked me with the darkness. I am still trying to get used to it even on my last winter in Sweden. But it was paid off when I had an opportunity to see the aurora borealis just outside my window. It was wonderful!
How did you meet and get to know new people?
– I see that the locals do not easily say hi in the beginning. They tend to sit around the other Swedes. But then I managed to befriend them; even I have some close Swede friends. I am happy that they want to share some stories and cultures with me. In general, I approach the people first in the beginning. Sometimes it is more natural yet a bit challenging for me.
What is your future goal with your education?
– I am finishing my education this semester and I will start my internship in a big company in Stockholm this summer. I hope I can manage to build my career in Sweden, fingers crossed.
What do you do beside your studies?
– During my last year in this Master's study, I was working as a course assistant. It was also a great opportunity to be able to see how the department works in Uppsala. I also have experience as a teaching assistant back in my Bachelor’s study. Thus, this chance was a way to compare what I did back then and how people here do the work. It was great!

– The library (anywhere) became my most favourite place since I was working on my thesis project.

– Kulturnatten (Culture night) and Valborg (Walpurgis)
What do you do in five years?
– Married, two kids maybe? Have my own business or/and manager in a multinational company xD.
Spring 2020
Programme
Since innovation processes connects to several of the companies' functions, the first year of studies will focus on the main functions of firms, including strategy, organisation, marketing, production, and research and development. You will be trained to lead innovation during courses in innovation management as well as project management. Courses in Engineering Ethics and Industrialisation, connects the innovation processes in a larger industrial and societal context. During the first year there are also elective courses for broadening and deepening some parts of the innovation work such as technology-based entrepreneurship, agile project management and supply chain management etc.
During the second year, you specialise in the field of management of technological innovation through the course Innovation: Traditions, Theories, Trends. In the course Industrial Development Project, you will work in a group to solve a sharp industrial project related to innovation such as the potential of new materials and technologies. The course Qualitative and Quantitative Methods gives you a good base to do scientific based investigations. During the spring you will conduct an independent degree project together with an industrial partner or within a larger research project.

Learning experience
The teaching consists of a variety of teaching activities including lectures, group exercises, labs, seminars, project work and field trips. During the programme you will attend seminars where you, together with other students, discuss concrete business problems and different cases. Many courses involve work in smaller groups with the aim to teach you how to collaborate in different group constellations. You will have the opportunity to meet and interact with people with vast industrial experiences during site visits, industrial guest lectures and industrial projects.
As a student you are expected to actively participate and take responsibility of your own learning. A lot of emphasis is on reading and scrutinising academic articles and texts within the field of innovation management and innovation as a complement to your technical background. Written examination can be found on all courses and the written language is a central tool during the programme.
The teachers in the programme are active researchers with extensive expertise in their research fields and they use some of their own research in their teaching. You can apply for writing the independent degree project within a research project.
The programme takes place in Uppsala at the Ångström Laboratory. The language of instruction is English.

Technology-intensive companies have a great use of well-trained professionals who understand new technology and innovation and how it relates to business, organisation and society at large. In other words, there is a great need for people with a broad expertise in several knowledge areas who want to engage in development and push innovation forward. The programme will train you to successfully manage complex problems where technology, organisation, business, and markets interact.

Requirements:
Academic requirements
A Bachelor's degree, equivalent to a Swedish Kandidatexamen, from an internationally recognised university. The main field of study must be engineering or technology.
Also required is 20 credits in mathematics.
Language requirements
Proficiency in English equivalent to the Swedish upper secondary course English 6. This requirement can be met either by achieving the required score on an internationally recognised test, or by previous upper secondary or university studies in some countries. Detailed instructions on how to provide evidence of your English proficiency are available at universityadmissions.se.
Selection: Students are selected based on:
- an overall appraisal of previous university studies; and
- a statement of purpose (1 page).
Tuition fee-paying students and non-paying students are admitted on the same grounds but in different selection groups.

Programme start and registration
The Master's Programme in Industrial Management and Innovation starts on August 24, at 9 am sharp, with a mandatory welcome meeting and roll call at the Ångström laboratory, lecture hall Sonja Lyttkens. If you can't attend the roll call, it is important that you inform the study counsellor in advance: study-adviser-mili-samint@uu.se.
