Registration
The registration desk opens on June 9 at 9.00 at Universitetshuset.

Wheelchair accessible entrance available from Övre Slottsgatan 7D.
Note that we are one of two conferences in this building on 9 June. Follow the NESS signs to find the correct registration desk and catering.

Registration and name badge
Please keep your name badge on and visible at all times during the entire conference, as it is your ticket for the conference, coffee breaks and lunches, reception at the townhall and conference dinner.

Workshops
The detailed schedule for all workshops has been published and indicates workshop rooms. The abstract book is also available on the workshops page.

Your workshop will either take place at Blåsenhus or Geocentrum. At Blåsenhus you will need to pass locked doors to enter staircases on the way to your workshop room. The code to open the doors has been sent to you via email the week before the conference. Even most doors to the workshop rooms will be locked and your convenors will be given an access card to open the rooms. We recommend using Mazemap together with the room information in the workshop schedule or the printed program that you will received upon registration to locate your workshop room.

Lunches and coffee breaks

Due to the large number of conference attendees we have split the group between two restaurants that are close to each other and you have been given slightly staggered lunch starting times on June 10 and 11 (these are visible in the workshop schedule).

Your name badge will indicate which restaurant you are assigned to, Blåsenhus (Restaurant Feiroz) or the restaurant at Segerstedtshuset. Please make sure to eat lunch at the correct restaurant. All participants in a given workshop have been assigned the same restaurant.

Coffee breaks will take place at Blåsenhus. For those having their workshop at Geocentrum, this involves a short walk (about 5 min). Note that the consumption of food is not allowed in workshop rooms.

Conference secretariat

During registration and the plenary sessions on the morning of 9 June and the afternoon of 11 June, the conference secretariat will be located at the main university building (Universitetshuset). During all other times you can find the secretariat in the main hall at Blåsenhus.

Luggage

During the plenary sessions on 9 and 11 June at the main university building (Universitetshuset), a staffed coat check will be available. For security reasons travel luggage such as suitcases, carry-on bags or larger backpacks need to be left at the coat check and must be picked up at the end of the plenary sessions, by 12:15 on 9 June and by 15:30 on 11 June.

There will not be any coat check at Blåsenhus or Geocentrum during workshop sessions. Here you can instead take your luggage with you to the workshop room.

Conference dinner - Wednesday 10 June
The conference dinner will take place upstairs at Uppsala's Saluhallen (the historic market hall).

If you have booked the dinner, your name badge will be marked on the back side with information for the staff at the restaurant. Please bring your name badge, as this is also your ticket for the dinner.

Social activities

If you have booked a social activity, please check the information on the Social activities page about meeting points and times, and make sure to arrive on time (this may require clicking on the respective activity heading in the grey boxes to unfold more information) .

Waiting lists

Many social activities and parallel sessions and panels are fully booked and we have waiting lists. In case you can no longer attend your booked activities, please let us know via email or by informing the secretariat during the conference so that your seat can be given to people on the waiting list.

NESS 2026 will be held in three places in Uppsala University within walking distance from one another: Aulan (the main University building), Geocentrum and Blåsenhus.

It is possible to travel to Stockholm by train and sleeper train from Berlin and Hamburg. Tickets can be purchased through either the German or the Swedish rail services.

From Stockholm to Uppsala by train

Traveling from Stockholm to Uppsala takes approximately 40–60 minutes, depending on the train operator. The SJ mobile app allows you to view and book trains from all operators in real time. Tickets can also be purchased directly on each operator’s website in advance. Please note that tickets cannot be bought on board the trains.

By plane to Stockholm Arlanda Airport

From Arlanda there are several options to get to Uppsala.

Taking the train takes only 18 minutes and is the fastest option.
At Arlanda, trains depart from SkyCity, located between Terminals 4 and 5. Trains are operated by SL, SJ or Mälartåg, with similar prices (~200 SEK). The SJ mobile app allows you to view and book trains from all operators in real time. Tickets can also be purchased directly on each operator’s website in advance. Please note that tickets cannot be bought on board the trains.

If you prefer taking the bus, you can take UL’s local bus line 801 from terminals 2, 3, 4, and 5. It takes around 50 minutes and costs 117 SEK.

At Arlanda Airport, authorized taxi companies are located directly outside the Arrivals Hall at Terminal 5 and outside Terminal 2. Most taxi companies offer fixed fares for journeys between Uppsala and Stockholm Arlanda Airport. The price for a standard taxi (1–4 passengers) is approximately 700 SEK.

As conference organizers, we have selected a range of activities that you can take part in together with other conference participants. All activities require registration, which is included in the conference registration form. Some activities are free of charge, while others require a fee that you will pay when you register for the conference.

• Gustavianum museum Gustavianum is the oldest standing building at Uppsala University. It was built between 1622 and 1625, and was used as the main building of the university between 1778 and 1887. Since 1997, it has been used as the university's museum. On the top floor the world’s second-oldest remaining anatomical theatre is found. Today Gustavianum manages the university's magnificent collections of archaeological and historical objects, art, coins and history of science. The museum building, Gustavianum, is an important venue for the university's collaboration with the local community. The exhibitions and programs are based on collections and research conducted at Uppsala University.
• SigtunaThe first town founded in Sweden and no other place on earth is as rich in runestones. For over 1000 years, Sigtuna has been a meeting place for people from all over the world. The magical castles, the beautiful nature and water, the ruins and the magnificent history are some of the reasons Sigtuna is such a loved place. The many shops, restaurants, cafés, and hotels contribute to the unique atmosphere. Sigtuna is situated between Stockholm and Uppsala. From Uppsala it takes about 1-1.5 hour to get to Sigtuna bus station by public transport (plan your travel here). You can either go by bus or by local commuter train to Märsta and change to a bus there.
• Bror Hjorth’s House Bror Hjorth (1894-1968) is considered one of the great modernists in Swedish art, equally skilled as a painter and sculptor, as well as a talented draftsman. He grew up a few miles north of Uppsala, but received his artistic training in Paris, where he lived and worked throughout the 1920s. His art is a celebration of love, music, and life. Bror Hjorth's House is an art museum in Uppsala housed in Bror Hjorth's former residence and studio. The museum has the largest and most representative collection of Bror Hjorth's art.
• Linnaeus' country estate Experience rural tranquillity and discover the summer estate where famous Swedish botanist and his family spent their summers in the 18th century. Carl Linnaeus bought the small estate Hammarby, 15 km south east of Uppsala, in 1758. He wanted a farm in the countryside where he could spend the summers together with his family, away from the “unhealthy environment” of Uppsala. Today, few Swedish manors offer such an authentic 18th century setting. It reflects the private life of Linnaeus as well as his scientific work. You can take a guided visit where you will both see the gardens of the estate and the inside of the house where the Linnaeus family spent their summers with original items from the time.

The NESS 2026 food philosophy

We want the meals served during NESS to reflect our idea of sustainable food while being nourishing and tasty. To achieve this, we have worked to incorporate local, in season, organic, and ethically sourced produce into all meals. At daytime meals are vegetarian, and the conference dinner includes a vegetarian option and a sustainably sourced fish option to choose from.

In practice, we have had on-going conversations with all caterers about what sustainable food means to them and we have collaborated to find potentially new and exciting ways to include organic and artisanal produce from the wider Uppsala region in the meals that will be served. We work with our on-campus restaurants - Restaurant Feiroz at Campus Blåsenhus, Restaurant Segerstedt at Campus Segerstedt, and Cajsa's Kök - for most of the meals, and we are delighted to be able to showcase the gastronomic institutions within Uppsala University.

Most of all, we hope that the food will satisfy everyone who has taken the time and effort to come to NESS 2026.
