Frequently asked questions (FAQ)

Yes. The NESS conference is widely appreciated for the length of time participants are able to spend presenting and discussing their work. To do this effectively, you need to submit a fully drafted manuscript in May 2026 to the workshop you are participating in.

There will be nine hours of workshop time in total (three hours on each day). All participants will read all full draft papers for their workshop in advance of the conference.

The suggested format is as follows: the participant presents key messages from their paper (5 minutes); the designated discussant(s) provides feedback and discusses the work with the presenter (15–20 minutes); this is followed by feedback from all participants and general discussion (15–20 minutes).

We will publish a book of abstracts based on the accepted abstracts. The full draft manuscripts will not be published. The full draft manuscripts will however be distributed to all participants in a given workshop (about 12 people + convenors) via email by the convenors so that the manuscripts can be discussed at the conference.

Each participant may freely choose which journal to submit their paper to after the conference and is therefore advised to follow the chosen journal’s author guidelines when preparing their draft manuscript.

As conference organisers, we have partnered with Ambio – A Journal of Environment and Society for a Special Issue including around 15 papers on ‘Bridging the gaps: advancing integration in environmental science, policy and practice’. See the call for papers here. Submitting a paper to Ambio is one possible option for participants, and all submissions will be peer-reviewed with the same rigor as any other submission.

Yes, a reduced fee is available for PhD students. Please select this option when you register. Registration will be available in January 2026.

At NESS conferences, participants generally follow their own workshop theme and attend all sessions on each day (nine hours in total).

Participants may attend the discussions in other workshops if their own workshop ends earlier due to having fewer participants. This must be agreed with the workshop convenors beforehand.

No. It will not be possible to present posters at the conference.

No, but if you have written a scientific paper from your thesis, you are eligible to present this.

Registration will open in mid-January 2026 and close on 4 May 2026. We will send an email out to our mailing lists when registration is open.

NESS 2026 will be held in three places in Uppsala University within walking distance from one another: Aulan (the main University building), Geocentrum and Blåsenhus. The map below shows the venues and also the locations for the evening reception and conference dinner.

There are many hotels in Uppsala and we have blocked a number of hotel rooms at a special rate for NESS participants. Please see the information on the Practical Information page, under the tab 'Accommodation'. You can book your rooms directly through the hotel with the available booking codes and/or through the provided link.

We have compiled information about travel to Uppsala on the Practical Information page, under the tab 'Travel to Uppsala'. We strongly encourage the use of trains as a climate friendly option to travel to Uppsala from Europe.
