Experimental studies with stem cells
In experimental studies, insulin-producing cells derived from human pluripotent stem cells are investigated for safety, differentiation and function after transplantation to different organs.
Stem cell-derived insulin-producing cells are currently available for clinical trials, but for clinical translation, protocols need to be developed to better monitor the cells, optimise cell survival and long-term function. Genetic modification of the cells in different ways, or pre-treatment of them, is being tested to improve the safety and long-term function of the cells.
