Binding stability is key to effective T-cell response
With a unique peptide and a new model for analysing the behavior of drug molecules in a subcutaneous environment, Per Hansson and Sara Mangsbo show that T-cell activation can be made more efficient through molecular fine-tuning. The study is published in the International Journal of Biological Macromolecules.
“Our model offers a more precise complement to previous tools, and via our involvement in SweDeliver we know that this tool is welcomed by both academia and the industry. In our collaboration with Sara Mangsbo, we confirm that the answers our model provides are consistent with animal models, with the publication putting a stamp of quality on our method and the fact that it delivers robust results,” says Professor Hansson.

New method for calculating bioavailability of biologic drugs
In a new thesis, Julia Parlow, PhD student at the Department of Medicinal Chemistry presents an in vitro model that enables the assessment of bioavailability of subcutaneously injected drugs at a preclinical stage.
“We have used hydrogels composed of collagen and hyaluronic acid. Using microscopy and FRAP techniques, we have mapped how drugs interact and are absorbed in an environment similar to that found beneath human skin. Comparative studies confirm that our method generates reliable data, which reduces the need for animal studies and provides a novel way to assess the bioavailability of potential drugs at a preclinical stage,” says Parlow.

SweDeliver in talks with AstraZeneca about research and the future
Per Hansson, Per Larsson and Göran Frenning, leaders of SweDeliver's Work Packages Parenteral, Oral and Pulmonary drug delivery, who recently visited AstraZeneca to discuss the future of the national competence centre, state that "There is every reason to look forward to continued positive development".
The program also included presentations of ongoing projects in SweDeliver's Work packages, where Per Hansson lectured on Parenteral delivery: Controlled release and targeting, with focus on subcutaneous administration of protein drugs.
