NAFLDiet

In the NAFLDiet study, we investigate whether we can improve the dietary treatment of type-2 diabetes by targeting liver fat. The results of the study will be novel and expected to be of importance for both treatment of type-2 diabetes and fatty liver disease (MASLD).

Description

NAFLDiet is a 12-month randomized controlled study involving 150 men and women with type-2 diabetes or prediabetes. Participants are randomly assigned to one of three diets: a low-carbohydrate diet rich in polyunsaturated fats (LCPUFA), a healthy Nordic diet rich in whole grains such as oats and rye with lower proportions of fat, especially saturated fat (HND), and a diet typically recommended in clinics based on the Nordic Nutrition Recommendations (NNR 2012). The study aims to investigate whether liver fat and related metabolic disorders can be reduced through dietary interventions and determine which of the diets is most effective compared to the control group. The study is expected to provide valuable information for patients with type-2 diabetes and those with fatty liver, as well as to strengthen the evidence for future dietary recommendations for individuals with type-2 diabetes. The intervention part of the NAFLDiet study was completed in December 2022, and the first results are expected to be published in 2024, followed by additional analyses and sub-studies.
