Prestigious award for Per-Ola Carlsson

Per-Ola Carlsson, Professor at the Department of Medical Cell Biology and Senior Physician at Uppsala University Hospital, has been presented with the international Innovation in Science and Technology Award by the charity organisation Beyond Type 1.

The award was handed over at a gala in New York, where Beyond Type 1 – which works globally to improve the lives of people living with diabetes – also celebrated its tenth anniversary.
“The evening was absolutely fantastic, and I am very pleased and honoured that our research at Uppsala University and Uppsala University Hospital, aimed at developing a cure for type 1 diabetes, is being recognised,” says Per-Ola Carlsson.
The gala also included an auction in support of the organisation’s work. The funds raised will help strengthen access to insulin and increase knowledge about type 1 diabetes.
Continuing successful research
Per-Ola Carlsson and his research group have recently gained significant international attention for a groundbreaking study in which, for the first time, insulin-producing cells were transplanted without the use of immunosuppressive medication. The results are promising and further strengthen hopes of one day curing type 1 diabetes.
The next stage is now underway.
“We hope to progress to the next step in about a year. We plan to investigate the potential of gene-modified, stem-cell-derived insulin-producing cells as a cure for type 1 diabetes,” he says.
“That is why this kind of recognition is so valuable. Hopefully, it will lead to increased funding, enabling us to bring our research closer to clinical application – and ultimately to benefit people with type 1 diabetes around the world.”
