Strategic Research Areas (SFOs) at the Disciplinary Domain of Medicine and Pharmacy

The Disciplinary Domain of Medicine and Pharmacy manages several of Sweden’s Strategic Research Areas (SFOs), ranging from cancer and healthcare sciences to molecular biosciences.

Since 2010, the national initiative on Strategic Research Areas has strengthened Swedish research in areas of major importance to society. Uppsala University coordinates seven of the country’s SFOs and participates in a further three.

At the Disciplinary Domain of Medicine and Pharmacy, three areas are central: cancer research, healthcare sciences, and molecular biosciences at SciLifeLab in Uppsala. Together, they form long-term, high-quality research environments that contribute to the Disciplinary Domain’s leading position in medicine, pharmacy and health.

Cancer research – U-CAN

U-CAN collects samples and information from cancer patients before, during and after treatment. This enables researchers to develop better diagnostic methods and create new, more precise treatments.

Healthcare sciences – U-CARE

U‑CARE’s research aims to offer patients and their families high-quality care through support and psychological treatment for somatic illness. We also work to improve clinical research by developing and applying smart and effective working methods.

Molecular biosciences – SciLifeLab i Uppsala

SciLifeLab in Uppsala is one of the world’s foremost research centres in modern biology. Here, we develop advanced technologies that help researchers understand how the body works and how to solve major challenges in health and the environment.

Strategic Research Areas Lund University coordinates

In addition to the Strategic Research Areas we coordinate, we also participate in three coordinated by Lund University.

Diabetes research – EXODIAB

In EXODIAB, Lund University’s diabetes centre and Uppsala University collaborate to develop novel treatments and ultimately medicines to stop or even cure diabetes.

EXODIAB – strategic research initiative in diabetes research

Understanding why diseases occur – Epihealth

Epihealth seeks to increase the knowledge about how diseases spread and why some individuals are affected. Through modern epidemiological research, we develop a platform for the future of education and research in the field.

EpiHealth – research programme on epidemiological research and infrastructures

Stem cells and the future of medicine – StemTherapy

StemTherapy is a national initiative in which Lund University and Uppsala University collaborate. The aim is to develop stem cell-based treatments that can help people with chronic diseases or severe injuries.
