Two researchers at the Disciplinary Domain of Medicine and Pharmacy have been awarded grants for their research projects by the Knut and Alice Wallenberg Foundation. Anna Dimberg and Dan Andersson will receive a combined total of more than SEK 50 million for their respective projects.
In total, Uppsala University has been awarded funding for eight different projects, two of which are based at Medfarm.
Anna Dimberg, Professor at the Department of Immunology, Genetics and Pathology, has been awarded SEK 25 million over five years for the project Harnessing immune niches for efficient CAR-T cell therapy of brain tumours.
“It feels absolutely fantastic! The long-term funding from KAW gives us an excellent opportunity to test new ideas and strategies to understand and optimise the function of CAR T cells in cancer therapy,” says Anna Dimberg, continuing:
“The grant allows me to combine my research on immune niches with the expertise of Magnus Essand (UU) and Randall Johnson (KI) in CAR T-cell therapy and metabolism to improve CAR T-cell treatment for brain tumours. It is incredibly exciting. Our aim is to help seriously ill cancer patients who currently have no effective treatment options.”
Dan I. Andersson, Professor at the Department of Medical Biochemistry and Microbiology, has also been awarded SEK 25 million over five years for the project Do antibiotics, bacteria and gut mucosa together drive cancer development?
“It is incredibly exciting to be able to embark on this project. The funding from KAW gives us the opportunity to investigate new links between antibiotics, bacteria and cancer,” he says.
