Prof. Robert H. Woody, University of Nebraska-Lincoln:
“Teaching and Learning Expressivity in Music Performance”
Robert H. Woody is the Steinhart Foundation Distinguished Professor of Music and Professor of Music Education at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, USA, where he teaches courses in music psychology and music education. His research has focused on the cognitive and emotional aspects of music-making, including motivation and practice, expressive performance skills, and vernacular musicianship. Woody has published several books, including Becoming a Real Musician: Inspiration and Guidance for Teachers and Parents of Musical Kids (2019), Psychology for Musicians: Understanding and Acquiring the Skills (2nd ed. 2022), Music Learning and Development: A Guide to Educational Psychology for Music Teachers (2024), and Vernacular Musicianship and Informal Learning (2024). Woody is an international leader in his field and was recently recognized on the Stanford/Elsevier Top 2% Scientists List. In this talk, Woody will discuss how expressive skills in music performance are best taught and learned based on recent research in music psychology and music education.
