“Tuned into Feelings: An Emotion Regulation Perspective on Why and How we Listen to Music”

Music can have profound influences on listeners: It can relax or boost energy, it keeps us focused or incites creative thought, it lifts our spirit but also accompanies our most difficult feelings. Emotion regulation is one of the main reasons why we listen to music. Our favourite songs can stabilise our mood, modulate how we feel, and help us explore complex emotions. In this talk, I discuss some of the core findings from recent music psychology research about why we listen to music for emotion regulation, and how music influences how we feel in our everyday lives.

Juliane Völker has dedicated her career to exploring the intricacies of emotional intelligence and its applications in various fields. As a post-doc researcher at the Swiss Center for Affective Sciences, she focuses on understanding and enhancing emotional experiences - particularly in the context of music and emotional communication.
