Harsh Vardhan Bhati is a lawyer, researcher and educator, specializing in environmental law. Harsh has lived and studied in India and the US. He holds a Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Laws with First Class Honours from Jindal Global Law School, O. P. Jindal Global University India. He was awarded an LL.M. in Environmental, Natural Resources, and Energy Law at Lewis & Clark Law School, USA.
Currently, Harsh is a doctoral candidate in Environmental Law at the Faculty of Law, Uppsala University. His research at Uppsala examines how law can contribute to achieving Swedish and international political goals for the preservation of culture and nature. In particular, how the legal system balances the goals of sustainable energy use and historic preservation.
In his professional work, Harsh works on environmental policy and law-related advocacy and consulting with government institutions, municipal bodies, Universities, NGOs, and various national and international stakeholders. He was admitted to the Bar Council of India in 2015 and has been working on various environmental and human rights campaigns. He worked on public interest environmental cases and state government cases ranging from waste management, lake rejuvenation, tiger reserve protection, mining issues in protected forest areas, bio-piracy to tree felling and conservation of grassland areas in India. Having a particular interest in the rights of indigenous people and forest rights, he has participated in and contributed towards legal and social advocacy work in Ecuador and Amazon Rainforest in Brazil.
Harsh has taught environmental law to students at Jindal Global Law School in India and currently teaching NOMPEL Master program students at the Faculty of Law, Uppsala University.
Research and writing interests: indigenous rights, heritage conservation, sustainable energy use, waste management, rights of nature, and environmental & climate justice.
