The sandwich model

The sandwich model is primarily applied when the home university is not yet certified to issue PhD degrees, but once that is the case, the model can still be applied in order to enhance the conditions for training.
The sandwich model gives students access and exposure to more advanced training facilities new cultures (both academic and non-academic) and international research collaborations. This is done without having to detach students from their home institution (and family) for several years.
In addition to providing scholarships for training periods abroad, the sandwich model, as applied by ISP, is also about enabling an improved research environment at students' home universities. In the fields of chemistry and physics this often implies physically improving the research facilities by allocating funds for equipping laboratories with instruments, chemicals or literature needed to carry out research.
The name sandwich is inspired by a multi-layered sandwich, since the participating students build layers of knowledge and capacity from moving back and forth between their home and host institutions. The rich fillings represent the research stays at home and abroad, while the dry crusts of bread represent the travels....
