Bilateral research cooperation in Bolivia

The overall objective of the research cooperation in Bolivia is to enhance the universities´ capacity to contribute to advance universal knowledge and develop postgraduate studies in science in order to join scientific research, technological development, and innovation activities acknowledged by society.

The programme phase is for five years, from 1 July, 2021 to 30 June 2025.

The two Bolivian universities involved in the cooperation are:

• Universidad Mayor de San Andrés (UMSA)
• Universidad Mayor de San Simón (UMSS)

Universidad Mayor de San Andrés (UMSA)

The UMSA bilateral research program is entitled Science, technology and innovation at University Mayor de San Andrés.

Research areas in the programme:

1. Food science and technology for the sustainable development of Bolivia
2. Technological and productive development
3. Water and soil
4. Energy, renewable raw materials and mining
5. Health
6. Socioeconomics, education and culture
7. Research management

The programme has 21 subprograms of which only one has no Swedish partners.

The Swedish partners in the Sida-UMSA cooperation are:

Universidad Mayor de San Simón (UMSS)

The UMSS bilateral research cooperation program is entitled Strengthening institutional research capacities at Universidad Mayor de San Simom, and has 10 research areas and 12 subprograms, of these one is a continuation of a subprogram of the previous bilateral cooperation phase. Of these 12 new programs, three do not have Swedish partners.

11. Information communication technologies - no Swedish partners (previous phase)
