Tribomaterials
Ångströms tribomaterialgrupp är en del av avdelningen för tillämpad materialvetenskap vid Uppsala universitet.
Research area Tribology
Our research area is Tribology – the science of surfaces in mechanical contact under relative motion, which we approach from a materials perspective. The research often deals with questions around how materials, coatings, surface treatments or lubrication can be improved to reduce friction and wear.
"Better tribology" can lead to amazing benefits for sustainability (energy, environment and health, raw material savings) as well as for quality, economy, safety and much more.
We teach undergraduate and graduate courses (civilingenjörskurser) on materials science, surface analysis, electron microscopy, surface engineering, and tribology.
PhDs and theses from the group
Broad research in close collaboration with industry
The research is broad and includes the use and development of wear testing, advanced techniques for surface imaging and surface analysis, wear modelling and modern surface treatment techniques.
Our research is often conducted in close collaboration with industry, with projects ranging from failure analysis and material selection, through mapping of complex wear phenomena in different applications, to more fundamental knowledge building research. We strive to bridge the gaps in tribology, thinking both of the gap between academic research and industrial development, and the gap between basic understanding and resulting properties in different applications.
Feel free to download and read Petra Olander's popular science introduction Tribology: Everywhere every day, but no one ever heard of it.
Tribotesting Equipment
The Tribomaterial Group has developed and built a diverse collection of test rigs, often designed specifically for given contact situations. We develop our own rigs and our own test methods.
Tribology and Sustainability
Today, one of the main focuses is on enabling the transition to a more sustainable and energy-efficient society. Here, tribology has many important roles to play.
The National Research School in Tribology
The Tribomaterial group is part of the national graduate school in tribology. The graduate school provides a coherent graduate education in tribology through an organised collaboration between several subjects and several universities and colleges.
