WiseEST platform

All too often sustainable technology transitions are held back by unexpected friction and wear problems. WiseEST is aimed for enabling such transitions, by offering a dedicated, application-relevant test and analysis facility, and tribological expertise. The resulting deepened understanding of the problems will offer important insights on how the new materials, coatings and lubricants should be finetuned - to allow sustainable solutions to become competitive, accepted and widely used.
Tribology, an interdisciplinary subject
Tribology is an interdisciplinary subject dealing with the science and technology of interacting surfaces in relative motion. In any contact between two surfaces there is an influence of tribological phenomena such as wear, friction, contact stress, tribo-corrosion, and fatigue. Such phenomena have a tremendous negative impact on energy efficiency, service life, reliability, safety, productivity, and robustness.
WiseEST offers world-class and versatile tribological testing facilities and extensive and advanced materials analysis capabilities, combined with the experience of tribology experts from two leading universities in tribology.
Materials science and sustainability
Three aspects of WiseEST allows it to make significant contributions to materials science and sustainability:
- The platform offers immediate impact – enabling important transitions to sustainable technologies and speeding up their implementation.
- The platform offers wide impact – addressing tools, mechanical components and larger systems, focusing on improving their energy efficiency during use
- Extending the lifetime of tools and components, extends their use phases, offer a transition from a circular to a green elliptical economy
