Each year, a speaker is chosen in honour of publisher Adam Helms. This year's speaker, Richard Ovenden, will give his lecture on 16 September.

The idea of a library is almost as old as civilisation itself, but in the 21st century libraries are being challenged as never before – funding for libraries is being cut in many countries, and major technology companies, especially those in the field of AI, are making major interventions in the areas where libraries have had traditional expertise.

The lecture will explore the ways in which libraries are responding to these challenges and suggest an approach to asserting the value of libraries in our world. Richard Ovenden is Bodley’s Librarian at the University of Oxford, where he is also Head of Gardens, Libraries and Museums, and author of Burning the Books: A History of Knowledge Under Attack (2020).

The lecture will be held in English.

Welcome!
