The clock at Carolina is counting down to the donning of the caps

Carolina Redivivas fasad med en stor digital klocka

If you walk past Carolina Rediviva these days, you may have noticed it - a clock on the facade counting down, second by second, to 15.00 on 30 April.

The donning of the caps has become a well-known part of Valborg in Uppsala.

The countdown marks one of Uppsala University's most cherished traditions – the Cap Ceremony in front of Carolina Rediviva.

At exactly 15:00 on 30 April, the Rector raises his student cap from the balcony of Carolina Rediviva and waves to the assembled crowd –who respond by waving back and putting on their own caps at the same time.

The tradition, which took its current form in the 1950s, started when then-rector Torgny Segerstedt introduced the gesture as a unifying sign of spring.

The clock at Carolina is a reminder that spring is approaching - and that one of the University's most beloved moments is almost here.
