Formerly supported networks in East Africa
AECC - African Enumerative Combinatorics Community
ISP Mathematics supported the network AECC (formerly know as CoRS - Combinatorial Research Studio) between 2018-2025. The network is still active.
Network members are:
- Addis Ababa University, Ethiopia
- University of Antananarivo, Madagascar
- Makerere University, Uganda
- Mbarara University of Science and Technology, Uganda
Supervising/mentoring collaborators from France and Sweden are:
- Paris City University, France
- Stockholm University, Sweden
AECC has been successful in gathering very talented students and supervising collaborators from Sweden and France. Moreover, almost half of the members of AECC are female scientists.
ISP supported the network 2018-2025. The network is still active. Please see their webpage for news https://african-enumerative-combinatorics.github.io/.
Objectives
The main objective is to bring together mathematicians, both students and researchers, across Africa with a shared interest in counting problems, generating functions, and discrete structures.

APREA - Applied Probability Research in Eastern Africa
The Applied Probability Research in Eastern Africa (APREA) was supported by ISP 2018-2025.
Network members were:
- University of Nairobi, Kenya
- Kenyatta University, Kenya
- Technical University of Kenya, Kenya
- Makerere University, Uganda
- Kyambogo University, Uganda
- Eduardo Mondlane University, Mozambique
Supervising/mentoring collaborators from Sweden were:
- KTH Royal Institute of Technology, Sweden
- Linköping University, Sweden
The activities were coordinated by Professor Patrick Weke, Department of Mathematics, University of Nairobi, Kenya.
Objectives
The main objective of APREA was to form a sustainable statistical research group whose focus is in solving health, economic and environmental issues using applied probability theories which eventually will contribute significantly towards poverty reduction.
The group organised bi-weekly virtual seminars and our future plans include joint scientific workshops, collaborative research and joint publications.

EAALG - Eastern Africa Algebra Research Group
The Eastern Africa Algebra Research Group (EAALG) was supported by ISP 2018-2025. The network is still active.
EAALG consists of members from seven mathematics departments representing seven different countries:
- Addis Ababa University, Ethiopia
- Makerere University, Uganda
- University of Nairobi, Kenya
- Khartoum University, Sudan
- Eduardo Mondlane, Mozambique
- University of Rwanda, Rwanda
- University of Zambia, Zambia
The activities are coordinated by Dr David Ssevviiri at Makerere University in Uganda.
Objectives
The overall objective of EAALG is to build research and graduate training capacity in Algebra within the Eastern Africa region. This is done through offering scholarships to postgraduate students, organising workshops and summer schools, facilitating research and also through collaborations among the member departments with other researchers from both the South and the North.

EAUMP - Eastern Africa Universities Mathematics Programme
ISP supported the mathematics network EAUMP between 2002-2025. Network members were the Departments of Mathematics at:
- University of Nairobi, Kenya
- University of Rwanda, Rwanda
- University of Dar es Salaam, Tanzania
- Makerere University, Uganda
- University of Zambia, Zambia
The network is now part of the ISP-supported CoRE Math network.
Objectives
The objectives of the network were:
- Enhancement of postgraduate training with special emphasis to PhD training.
- Establishing and strengthening collaborative research in mathematics areas of interest in the region.
- Strengthening the collaborating mathematics departments in terms of equipment and literature.
- Development of resources for the collaborating mathematics departments.
- Postdoctoral training of academic staff.

PDEAPP - Partial Differential Equations and Applications
PDEAPP was supported by ISP 2018-2025.
PDEAPP consists of members from seven mathematics departments representing six different countries:
- University of Joseph Ki-Zerbo, Burkina Faso
- Addis Ababa University, Ethiopia
- Eduardo Mondlane University, Mozambique
- University of Rwanda, Rwanda
- Busitema University, Uganda
- Makerere University, Uganda
- University of Zambia, Zambia
The activities were coordinated by Professor Banzi Wellars at University of Rwanda and Professor Hamidou Toure at University of Joseph Ki-Zerbo in Burkina Faso.
Objectives
The overall goal was to strengthen the growth of Partial differential equations and application in Africa through research and publication.
The first strategic objective was to identify and formulate new research projects, to train research group members in research proposal grant writing.
The second strategic objectives to achieve this goal was the support MSc and PhD students.
The third strategic objective was research collaboration North- South and South-South through research visits.
Two research projects are undergoing namely Dirichlet Boundary value problem for nonlinear elliptic equations with variable exponents and Neumann Boundary value problem for nonlinear elliptic equations with variable exponents.
