Physics groups in Myanmar
ISP Physics supports the following research groups in Myanmar:
- Research capacity building at the University of Mandalay
- Investigation of Redox Electrodes for Electrochemical Desalination, Supercapacitor and Microbial Cells at the University of Yangon
Research Capacity Building
This research group at the Department of Physics at the University of Mandalay has received ISP support since 2016. Coordinator of the activities is Dr So Ko Ko Aung.
Objectives
The University of Mandalay is the oldest university in Upper Myanmar and is offering PhD programs in Arts and Science disciplines. Being a National Research University, it aims to promote the research capacity of its staff and students in multidisciplinary research areas.
Primary attention is placed on (i) the training and development of new generations of academicians and (ii) implementation of sound infrastructures of research laboratories and state-of-the-art facilities.
ISP supports research three areas: Nanomaterials and Device Physics, Environmental Sampling and Theoretical Nuclear Physics.

Fabrication and Performance Investigation of Redox Electrodes for Electrochemical Desalination, Supercapacitor and Microbial Cells
This research group at the University of Yangon has received ISP support since 2021. The coordinator of the activities is Professor Than Zaw Oo.
Objectives
The University of Yangon, established in 1920, is the oldest university in Myanmar, and it aspires to be a leading institution of excellence and one of Myanmar’s Flagship Universities.
The overall objective of the research group is to promote research capacity building of faculty and students by establishing research priorities, supporting or upgrading the research facilities and undertaking exchange visits/research conferences for faculty and students.
ISP supports research in the fields of fabrication and performance investigation of Redox electrodes for electrochemical desalination, supercapacitor and microbial cells.
The research work is constituted by three sub-projects:
- Redox electrodes for electrochemical desalination
- Nanofiber electrodes for electrochemical supercapacitors
- Bioelectrode for microbial cells.
