Hip deformation in children and young adults
Within the research group, we work with clinical and register-based studies of Perthes disease and hip dysplasia in children and the consequences of these diseases in young adults. Femoroacetabular impingementis one other ailment that can cause discomfort for young adults. There is still a lack of the etiology and treatment. Current treatments involve trimming the hip via arthroscopy, yet it is unclear whether this treatment is effective and if it can prevent the development of osteoarthritis.
Register-based research
1. Observational studies of several registers. E.g., SPOQ (Swedish Paediatric Orthopaedic Quality Register) and the Swedish National Patient Register
Questions at issue:
- Mapping of completed treatment using hip arthroscopy in Sweden between 2012 and 2015 looking at radiological findings and complication rates.
- Mapping of intake of medicines amongst patients with Perthes Disease.
- Validation studies of the SPOQ – examination of Lateral Pillar Classification of patients registered in SPOQ since 2015.
2. Clinic’s own output register
Questions at issue:
- How many children develop radiological pelvic or hip anomalies in the 15 years following treatment for hip displacement using von Rosen splints?
- Are there any risk factors associated with late development of hip displacement in teenagers and young adults, whose hip development was initially normal during childhood?
