New student at the Library
Welcome to Uppsala University Library. Here we have gathered some information about the Library that might be useful for new students
Uppsala University Library consists of ten libraries in Uppsala and one in Visby. All libraries have different subject focuses, but are open to everyone, no matter what you study. This means that you can sit and study wherever you want, borrow whatever books you want and return the books everywhere. Not all libraries staffed but staff can be reached via our service Ask the Library.
Borrow books from the Library
To borrow print books you must first register as a patron. The libraries in Uppsala and on Campus Gotland do not have the same library account:
Register as a new borrower at Almedalen Library
Register as a new borrower at our libraries in Uppsala
E-books and other e-resources do not require any registration.
Print books are checked out where they are available. It is not possible to request books to be sent to another library or to your home address. All books can be returned at any of our libraries regardless of where you borrowed them.
Print books at our libraries in Uppsala can be found using the Library Search Tool – the search box on the start page of our website.
Print books at Almedalsbiblioteket can be found in Almedalen Library's Search Tool.
Course books
The University Library should have at least one copy of every course book at undergraduate level. Course books are found at the respective subject libraries. You can read some copies in the library only, while others may be borrowed and taken home for seven days. Some of your course books may be available as e-books.
For readers with disabilities
Students with reading disabilities or problems with mobility or sight have the right to borrow customised course books such as talking books, e-textbooks, books in Braille or with large text.
Read and download e-books and other e-resources
The Library’s e-books and other e-resources can be found using the Library Search Tool – the search box on the start page of our website. To access our e-resources off-campus, log in with your student account (user-ID and password A).
Read more about access to e-resources.
The University Library has many e-books within various subject areas, as well as encyclopaedias, course books and reference books. Many e-books can be downloaded to a computer, phone or a tablet. If you want to download books, you will need an Adobe account.
Computers and Wi-Fi
At all subject libraries, there are computers you can use. Log in with your student account (user-ID and password A). Students have access to the Wi-Fi network Eduroam.
Copy, scan and print
At the library you can use eduPrint to print, copy and scan documents. Students and researchers connected to eduroam can also use their own laptop, tablet or smartphone to print. As a student, you already have an eduPrint-account. All you need to do before you can start using it is to add credit in the eduPrint portal. If you require help with eduPrint, you are welcome to contact the University's IT support.
Reading rooms, group study rooms and study places
There are around 2000 study places at the Library, distributed across all eleven subject libraries. The study places are divided up into quiet reading rooms, “conversation permitted” and group study rooms. Go to Our libraries to find out which libraries offer what.
