En dramatisk ökning i antalet personer som drabbas av atopiska allergier, de sk. IgE medierade allergierna, har skett under de senaste 50 åren. Uppskattningar visar att 20-30% av populationen i vissa industrialiserade länder har allergiska symptom som är så allvarliga att det medför ett medicinskt problem. Denna situation tillsammans med att de flesta infektionssjukdomar är relativt väl kontrollerade, genom antibiotika och vaccinationsprogram, har gjort att atopiska allergier är en av de viktigaste medicinska utmaningarna för 2000-talet. Till de vanligaste atopiska allergierna räknas pollen, nöt, skaldjur, mjölk, fisk, och pälsdjurs allergier samt olika former av astma och dermatit (atopiska eksem).
